My dad Edward Mayes and my Uncle Jack fostered my reading curiosity at a very young age. My dad would read the bible for hours every day with an occasional Zane Grey western thrown in and my Uncle Jack read Zane Grey and any other western novel constantly. I was amazed how any one could read for hours almost every day.
I guess my love of reading started when I nine years old. I discovered Jules Verne and read many of his classics. Many times I sat in the classroom with one of his novels hidden behind my text books. To be able to escape to a magical world of the writers imagination had me hooked. I read continuously after that. H.G. Wells was my next favorite author followed by Walter Farley, Albert Payson Turhune, Jack London, and Stephen King. It would take a while to list all my favorite authors.
Jack London's "Call of the Wild" is one of my favorites to this day.
My fascination with horror and paranormal came from ghost stories from the mountains and my older sisters always scaring us when we were young. Lon Chaney Jr charged my imagination and for a while I was the ultimate monster guy in the family. If you wanted to dress up for Halloween, you would scare the devil out of someone when I was finished creating the perfect monster to fit your face.
